Inspection and testing
PAT testing
Inspection and testing of portable electrical equipment for offices, shops, workshops and landlords — every item labelled and recorded, with as little disruption to your day as possible.
What PAT testing involves
Each item is given a formal visual inspection — the plug, lead and casing — followed by electrical tests appropriate to the type of equipment. Those include insulation resistance and, for earthed (Class I) appliances, earth continuity. Extension leads and multi-way adaptors are checked too.
Typical items include computers and monitors, printers, kettles, microwaves, power tools, chargers, heaters, lamps and extension leads.
Is it a legal requirement?
Not in the way it's often described. The law — including the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 — requires employers to keep electrical equipment in a safe condition, but it doesn't say that every appliance must be tested every year. PAT testing is a practical, well-recognised way to show equipment is being maintained, and a clear record helps with insurance and inspections.
Landlords who supply electrical appliances with a property have a duty to make sure they're safe, and PAT testing is a common way to do that.
How often?
It depends on the type of equipment and how it's used. A desktop computer in an office needs far less attention than a power tool on a building site or a kettle in a busy staff kitchen. The Health and Safety Executive's guidance, Maintaining portable electric equipment in low-risk environments, is a good starting point, and we'll suggest sensible intervals for your equipment.
What you receive
- A pass or fail label on every item tested.
- A register listing each item, its location and its results.
- A note of any failures, with the reason and what we'd recommend.
We can work around your opening hours to keep disruption to a minimum. To quote, it helps to know roughly how many items you have and how many sites are involved.
